You wash your clothes when they get dirty. You wash your car. You even wash your pets. But people often forget to clean their fine jewelry and instead allow dirt, lotion, and soap film to accumulate, diminishing the shine, luster and brilliance of their precious stones and metals. If you never clean your jewelry you will grow accustomed to the dull appearance and gradually forget how beautiful and sparkling it originally looked.

You spend lots of time and money shopping for the best and most beautiful fine jewelry. But jewelry that is not kept clean looks no better than lower quality goods. An occasional trip to the jewelry store for a checkup and professional cleaning is certainly a good practice, but it is important to do some regular maintenance at home in between. Fortunately, it is quite easy and inexpensive to do.

For diamond jewelry, a soak in household ammonia and warm water (2/3 water, 1/3 ammonia) will loosen soap film and dirt build up from your fine jewelry. A little brushing with an old, soft toothbrush and a rinse with fresh water will go a long way to brightening up the piece. Household ammonia is easy to find in most grocery stores, and it will not harm gold or platinum. For jewelry with organic gemstones such as pearl, coral, or amber, and for gems that are enhanced or treated, it is best to use warm water with a little bit of mild soap.

Better yet, for a professional quality cleaning at home we recommend a two step process. First soak your jewelry in an ultrasonic or vibrasonic cleaner such as the Blitz vibrasonic home jewelry cleaner. The vibrating action of the Blitz will loosen any dirt or film that has accumulated, making it very easy to remove in the second step.
