You've more than likely heard the term, but what does it really mean? A "blog" (short for web log) is really a kind of online journal or diary. Entries into a blog become web pages that can be viewed using programs called newsreaders. Blogs can contain the same kinds of content that websites have -- text, images, sounds, links and more. Blogging has become an extremely popular way for people to share their thoughts and interests with friends and family, and if they choose, the rest of the world.

Blogs are a form of web content that is easily distributed or "syndicated" in the form of "news feeds." You may see buttons on websites labled RSS or XML that are links to add that site's content to your newsreader. It then becomes available to you without actually going out to the site to get it, and it always stays updated with the most recent content.

Many of the major portals such as Google, Yahoo and MSN have newreaders built in that enable you to read blogs and find and add blog feeds to your home page. This is sometimes called "subscribing" to a feed, but unlike other subscriptions it is free! It just means that you have it automatically delivered to your digital door every time you log on.

It's also free to create your own blog at blogger.com. Try it -- it's easy once you get the hang of it and it's alot of fun. You start to get all kinds of creative ideas once you dip into it.

One of the compelling aspects of blogging is the collaborative nature of it. Others can comment on your posts and their comments can be read by all who are subscribing or viewing your blog. And they can insert links and images as well into their responses. At the same time there are tools that allow you to control who sees your blog and who can post comments to it, so you can keep it private if you wish.

We have started the Gem Diamond Company "Diamond Daily" blog in order to share our perspective on the world of diamonds and fine jewelry and keep in touch with our friends and customers. The log entries are short and may contain links to other information, products, websites or items we think might be of interest. Our readers will stay current with what's happening at gemdiamond.com and see our latest styles and custom jewelry designs as they come off the jeweler's bench. And we encourage readers to participate by posting comments and questions.
