The traditional diamond wedding set consists of an engagement ring and a matching wedding band that fit snugly together.

Variations on the theme include ring guards and wraps. Ring guards are actually two connected rings that the engagement ring fits into creating a three ring combination. A wrap is a single ring that has features such as accent stones that cross to the side of the engagement ring creating a two ring look that embelishes the engagement ring- usually a simple tiffany style.

Modern diamond wedding sets come in many different forms. In fact, many couples today are going away from the "set" concept and choosing more elaborate engagement rings that stand alone. In keeping with the trend towards independence and freedom of choice, many couples no longer feel bound by convention. Yet for most couples the concept of an engagement ring that is complemented by a matching wedding band still has great appeal. The engagement ring is worn by itself until the day of the ceremony when the wedding band is slipped on, symbolizing completion and unity.

There are a couple of issues with diamond wedding sets that should be considered. First, will there be times when the bride will want to wear only the wedding band and leave the big rock at home (for instance, a trip to the beach)? If so, a band contoured to fit the engagement ring may look odd by itself. Some couples opt to buy an additional symmetrical band for these occasions. Secondly, if there are diamonds in the band, do they go all the way around or are they just on the top half? For wedding sets with diamonds only on the top,the rings need to lock in place or be soldered together in order to line up correctly at all times. Soldering is always possible, but then the band cannot be worn seperately.
