No lady's jewelry box is complete without a beautiful, glowing piece of fine pearl jewelry. Whether it be a classic pair of Akoya pearl studs, a traditional freshwater pearl necklace, a dramatic black Tahitian pearl pendant, or a stunning South Sea pearl ring, pearls complete an outfit! However, it is important to know how to properly care for fine pearls, one of natures most delicate gems.
Pearls that occur spontaneously in a mollusk as well as cultured pearls require the same handling and care. All natural pearls are relatively soft, meaning they can be scratched. You should also take care when storing your fine pearls. Pearl jewelry should be stored in a soft jewelry pouch, or wrapped in a soft cloth, since fine pearls may scratch by coming in contact with other pieces of jewelry, particularly very hard diamonds, sapphires, or rubies.
Pearls are formed in ocean creatures, and naturally require moisture to maintain their luster and beautiful appearance. In order to allow enough moisture to reach your pearl jewelry, avoid air tight packaging such as zip-lock baggies or safe deposit boxes.
Gentle home cleaning of pearl jewelry is also recommended. All chemicals should be avoided when cleaning or wearing fine pearls, including ammonia, bleach, perfume, and lotion. These chemicals may affect the color of the pearl's glowing outer layer, called nacre, or may form a build up on the thread of a pearl necklace. A pearl necklace may be cleaned at home using a soft damp cloth, in order to gently wipe away any build up of chemicals or body oils that may discolor the pearls over time. As a general rule, a fine pearl necklace should be professionally re-strung if you notice any fraying or loosening of the string. This may be done quickly and affordably at Gem Diamond Company, or through your local jewelry store.
By following these general guidelines, you are ensuring the upkeep of your fine pearls, and a lifetime of enjoyment out of your pearl jewelry. You may learn more about pearls, pearl jewelry, and pearl care in the Gem Diamond Company pearl education section.
