An increasing number of gemological laboratories perform analysis for diamond dealers and consumers worldwide. These reports, also known widely as certificates, document the measurements and quality factors of the diamond and include details and diagrams that evidence the unique identity of the diamond. Each lab uses a slightly different format for their document.

The most widely respected lab is the Gemological Institute of America Gem Trade Lab (GIA/GTL), while the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL) is also widely used and the American Gem Society Laboratory (AGSL) supplies a report including a cut grade system that is highly regarded for �ideal� round brilliants.

*An appraisal is a separate document done by a firm that renders an estimate of value of a loose stone or a finished piece of jewelry.
