Fine pearls are strung on silk or nylon thread with a knot separating each pearl. This not only keeps the pearls from rubbing against one another, but if the string should break, only one pearl should come loose. Pearl thread will become dirty over time and may stretch or otherwise weaken. Pearls should be professionally restrung when this occurs.
