This is a gem quality natural, unheated Ceylon sapphire. This fabulous pear shaped gem is "Cornflower" blue and has a velvety quality reminiscent of the fabled Kashmir stones. The stone measures 8.19 x 6.47 x 5.15mm and weighs 2.43ct. It is cut a little deep in the classic Sri Lankan way giving the stone superior luster. The shape of this stone makes it a superb candidate for a pendant, but would also be fine in a ring design.
Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) produces perhaps the finest sapphires in the world in all different colors and color combinations. It is estimated that well over 90% of the world's gem sapphires are heat treated. For the gem purist, there are stones like this one. It came out of the ground so pretty it needed only faceting - no enhancement! The stone has been certified by the American Gem Trade Association's Gem Testing Center as natural sapphire, with no indication of heating. Please click the zoom image to see certificate image.
